Abstract Phone Validation Alternatives: API Limits, Bulk Lists and Price
The usual reason to replace Abstract's phone validation API is shape, not quality: it is a per-request API, and its self-serve tiers list 3 requests a second. That suits a sign-up form. It is slow for a list: 100,000 numbers at 3 per second take more than nine hours of looping, and the request allowance has to cover the whole file. If you're cleaning lead lists, a bulk upload tool fits better. If you're validating forms, Numverify, Veriphone and Twilio Lookup are the API alternatives to compare.
All prices were read from each vendor's pricing page on 6 November 2026.
Abstract's phone pricing, read closely
From Abstract's pricing page, phone validation section:
| Tier | Included data | Price shown | Requests |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | Validation, location, carrier, messaging, registration, risk | $0 | 100 |
| Starter | Validation, location, carrier | $19 a month billed monthly ($17 billed yearly) | 5,000 a month (60,000 a year) |
| Standard | Adds messaging | Slider | From 3,000 a month |
| Professional | Adds registration and risk | Slider | From 2,000 a month |
| Enterprise | Everything, flexible rate limits | Custom | Flexible |
Two details matter for buyers:
- Richer tiers start at fewer requests. The Standard slider starts at 3,000 requests a month and Professional at 2,000, against 5,000 on Starter. If you need registration or risk data on a big list, price your real volume on the slider before committing.
- Rate limit. Free and self-serve tiers list 3 requests per second. Paid tiers also list bulk CSV upload, which avoids writing a loop, but your monthly request allowance still has to cover the file.
The alternatives
Veriphone
Veriphone sells non-expiring packs: 10,000 for $24, 100,000 for $119, 1,000,000 for $399. One credit is a standard validation; a live Current Carrier Lookup costs 10 credits, and an unresolved lookup is charged as a standard one. Monthly plans run from $12.99 for 10,000 credits to $249 for 1,000,000. It has a list-cleaning upload. For bulk standard validation, it is one of the cheapest options anywhere. Full detail in Veriphone alternatives.
Numverify
Numverify has a free tier with 100 requests a month, Basic at $14.99 for 5,000, Professional at $59.99 for 50,000 and Enterprise at $129.99 for 250,000, up to 15% off yearly. One response includes validity, location, carrier and line type. A plain API for developers; overage is per call. See Numverify alternatives.
Twilio Lookup
Twilio Lookup formats and validates for free. Line Type Intelligence is $0.008 a request, Caller Name $0.01 (US only), Line Status tiered from $0.007. API-only, with rates that don't depend on a plan. The natural choice if your app already sends through Twilio. See Twilio Lookup alternatives.
SimpleVerifier
SimpleVerifier is built for lists. Upload a CSV of up to 100,000 rows and each phone number gets a status (valid, invalid or empty), its E.164 form, its country and its numbering-plan type. No loop, no rate limit to manage, and the phone column is found automatically from common headers (phone, mobile, cell, direct phone).
- Pro, $39 a month: phone format checks included, plus Unlimited email verification* on any email column in the same file.
- Pro + Phone, $49.99 a month: adds 5,000 live carrier lookups a month, with carrier name and carrier-reported line type (mobile, landline or VoIP), including US numbers. Failed lookups don't count.
- API: 10,000 calls a month included on Pro, then $1.50 per 1,000. The API docs cover email and phone calls, and the SDKs add a bulk helper.
*Fair use: the first 100,000 checks a month at full speed, then slower, never cut off. Phone lookups and API calls are not part of Unlimited.
Try one number free with the phone number validator or a column with the bulk phone number validator.
Side by side for three common jobs
| Job | Abstract | Veriphone | Numverify | Twilio Lookup | SimpleVerifier |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10,000 numbers, format only, once | Two Starter months, or the slider | $24 pack | Professional month, $59.99 | Free basic lookups, but you write the loop | Pro month, $39, with emails checked too |
| 5,000 US numbers, live line type | Check that Starter's carrier data is live | 50,000 credits: $79 pack | Basic plan, $14.99 (check whether line type is live) | $40 | Pro + Phone, $49.99 |
| Real-time sign-up form | Good fit | Good fit | Good fit | Good fit | API, 10,000 calls included |
The cheapest answer depends on the job. For pure one-off format validation, Veriphone's packs are hard to beat. For a lead list with both emails and phones, one upload that cleans both usually costs less than two vendors.
When you need live line type, and when you don't
Outside North America, a country's numbering plan usually says whether a range is mobile or fixed, so a format check gets you most of the way. In the US and Canada, mobiles and landlines share area codes. A numbering-plan check returns "mobile or landline" for most numbers there, and only a live carrier lookup tells them apart. That matters for SMS (landlines can't receive texts) and for compliance rules that treat mobiles differently. See mobile vs landline lookup and TCPA: mobile vs landline.
Neither check confirms that a person answers. Disconnected and reassigned numbers stay in valid ranges.
Before you switch
- Export a sample of 1,000 numbers and run it through your current tool and one alternative. Compare valid/invalid counts and, for US numbers, line type.
- Check the fields your code reads. Swapping APIs means mapping field names; a bulk tool returns new CSV columns instead.
- Clean the file first. Excel strips leading zeros. The phone number formatter and add or remove country code tools fix that for free.

Common questions
What is a good alternative to Abstract's phone validation API?
For an API: Numverify, Veriphone or Twilio Lookup, chosen by the fields you need. For cleaning a CSV of leads: a bulk tool such as Veriphone's list cleaner or SimpleVerifier, which validates every row in one upload.
How much does Abstract phone validation cost?
On 6 November 2026, its pricing page showed a free tier with 100 requests and a Starter plan at $19 a month for 5,000 requests billed monthly, or $17 a month billed yearly for 60,000 a year. Higher volumes and richer tiers are priced with a slider.
How fast is Abstract's phone API?
Its plans list 3 requests per second on the free and self-serve tiers (read 6 November 2026). Enterprise lists flexible rates.
Does Abstract tell me if a US number is mobile or landline?
Its Starter tier includes phone carrier data. For US and Canadian numbers, check that the line type comes from a live carrier source, because numbering-plan data alone can't separate mobiles from landlines there.
