Free phone number validator
In short: Check one phone number against its country's numbering plan and get its E.164 format, country and number type. Limit: Valid means the number fits an allocated range. It does not mean the line is in service, assigned to anyone, or able to take calls or texts.
A phone number validator checks a number against its country’s numbering plan. Enter a number and you get whether it’s valid, its E.164 format, its country and the type of line its range is allocated for. Valid means the number can exist, not that it is in service. It’s free, needs no account and runs in your browser.
Checked in your browser against the country's numbering plan; nothing is sent to a server. Valid means the number sits in an allocated range. It doesn't mean the line is in service.

What does a valid phone number mean?
It means the number could exist. A valid number has the right length for its country and sits in a range that has been allocated. That catches typos, missing digits, wrong country codes and made-up numbers like 000-000-0000.
It can’t tell you whether anyone is using the number today. Disconnected numbers stay in valid ranges, and numbers ported to another network keep their digits. Only a carrier lookup, or calling, gets closer to that. The full picture is in how to check if a phone number is valid.
For a country’s calling code, number length and example numbers, see phone number formats by country.
How do I add phone number validation to a Google Form?
Use a Short answer question with response validation set to a regular expression. In the question, open the three-dot menu, choose Response validation, pick Regular expression and Matches, and enter a pattern such as ^\+?[0-9 ()-]{7,20}$ (Google’s instructions).
That only checks the shape of what people type. It will still accept numbers no country has allocated, so check the responses afterwards: paste a single number here, or a whole column into the phone number formatter. For more patterns and their limits, see phone number validation with regex.
How do I check if a phone number is valid?
- Type or paste the number in any format. Spaces, brackets, dots and dashes are fine.
- If the number has no
+country code, pick its country from the menu. A number that starts with+uses its own code instead. - Read the verdict. Valid means the length and the prefix fit the country's numbering plan. Invalid says whether the length or the prefix is wrong.
- Copy the E.164 form, such as
+14155552671, for your CRM, dialer or SMS tool, and note the line type its range is allocated for.
Example
- You enter
(415) 555-0132, with United States picked as the country.- You get
- Valid US number format: E.164
+14155550132, international+1 415 555 0132, national(415) 555-0132, and range type mobile or landline, because the US numbering plan doesn't say which. - Limits
- One number at a time, with no usage limit and no account; it runs in your browser.
Is a phone validator the same as a carrier lookup?
No. They answer different questions, and the validator is the free, offline half:
| This validator | Carrier lookup | |
|---|---|---|
| What it reads | The country's numbering plan | The network's own records |
| Valid length and prefix | Yes | Yes |
| Carrier name | No | Yes |
| Line type | From the allocated range | From the current network, after porting |
| Cost | Free, no account, in your browser | Usually paid per lookup |
Who uses this tool, and for what?
- SMS teams
- Check a number before it goes into a campaign: an invalid number fails outright, and a number in a landline range often can't take texts. For a whole file, use the phone number formatter.
- Sales ops
- Fix a CRM record a rep typed by hand: get the country, the E.164 form your dialer wants, and whether the range is mobile or fixed line. The landline or mobile checker does the same for a list.
- SaaS teams
- Test the rule your sign-up form uses. The page uses libphonenumber-js, built on Google's libphonenumber data, so if your form uses either you can see why a customer's number was rejected.
- Recruiters
- Check a candidate's international number before a call, and copy it in the
+format your phone or calling app expects.
What can’t this tool tell you?
- Valid means the number fits an allocated range. It does not mean the line is in service, assigned to anyone, or able to take calls or texts.
- Line type comes from the range the number was first allocated in. Numbers keep their digits when they are ported to another network, so the type can be out of date.
- In the US and Canada, mobile and landline numbers share area codes, so most numbers there show "mobile or landline". Only a carrier lookup can tell them apart.
- Numbering plans change. A range opened after the page's libphonenumber data was last updated can show as invalid until the data catches up.
- It checks one number at a time. For a column of numbers, use the phone number formatter.

Common questions
- What is phone number validation?
- It is checking that a number is correctly formed for its country: the right length, a country code that exists, and a prefix that has been allocated. It catches typos and made-up numbers. It does not test whether the line is connected or who uses it.
- How do I validate an international phone number?
- Enter it with its + country code, such as +44 20 7946 0958, and the validator uses that country's plan automatically. Without the +, choose the country from the menu. Under the ITU's E.164 standard an international number is at most 15 digits, country code included.
- Can I validate a phone number with a regex?
- Only its shape. A regex can require digits, a + and a length range, but it cannot know which prefixes a country has allocated, so it accepts many numbers that cannot exist. Numbering-plan data such as libphonenumber, which this page uses, is the reliable check.
- How do I check if a phone number is valid?
- Type it into the validator above and pick the country if the number has no + code. It checks the number against that country's numbering plan: the length, whether the prefix is allocated, and what kind of line the range is for. A valid result means the number can exist; it doesn't prove the line is in service.
- Why does a US number show as 'mobile or landline'?
- Because the North American numbering plan gives mobile and landline numbers out from the same area codes, and numbers can be ported between the two. The digits genuinely don't say which it is. Telling them apart needs a live carrier lookup.
- Is this phone validator free?
- Yes, with no limit and no signup. It runs in your browser using Google's open-source libphonenumber data, so there is no per-number cost to pass on. Nothing you type is sent to a server.
- Can I validate a whole list of phone numbers?
- Yes, on the paid plan. Upload a CSV with a phone column and every row gets a status, the E.164 number, the country and the line type, with a download of valid numbers only. Email columns in the same file get a live mailbox check in the same pass.
