Sending rules and list practice

What is one-click unsubscribe?

Also called: RFC 8058, List-Unsubscribe-Post, List-Unsubscribe header

One-click unsubscribe lets a recipient leave a mailing list with a single click on a button their mail app shows, without visiting a page or confirming. It is defined in RFC 8058 and uses two headers, List-Unsubscribe and List-Unsubscribe-Post. Google and Yahoo require it from bulk senders.

The mail app sends an HTTPS POST to the URL in List-Unsubscribe, with the body List-Unsubscribe=One-Click. Your server must unsubscribe the address from that request alone, with no login and no confirmation page. Both headers must be covered by the message's DKIM signature.

Google requires it on marketing and subscribed messages from bulk senders and asks that unsubscribes be honoured within two days. A link in the footer is still expected as well.

The point is to give people an easier option than the spam button. Every unsubscribe you make easy is a complaint you avoid.

Example

List-Unsubscribe: <https://example.com/unsub?id=abc123>, <mailto:[email protected]> List-Unsubscribe-Post: List-Unsubscribe=One-Click
