Asking a happy customer for a referral

Asking an existing customer, soon after a clear win, whether they know someone in a similar position who could use what you do.

  • Glad {{result}} worked out. One question
  • Know anyone else dealing with {{problem}}?

The email

Hi {{first_name}},

Really glad {{result}} worked out. Thanks for trusting us with it.

Most of our new clients come from people like you, so I'll ask once: do you know anyone else at {{customer_type}} who's dealing with {{problem}}?

If someone comes to mind, an introduction would be great. Or if you'd rather, send them my way and I'll take it from there.

And if nobody does, no worries at all. Thanks again.

Highlighted {{placeholders}} are the parts to replace. If you cannot fill one with something true and specific, cut the sentence rather than leaving it generic.

When to use it

Send it shortly after a clear, visible success: a project delivered, a goal hit, a problem solved. Asking at that moment is natural. Asking at renewal or during a problem is not.

Ask once. Do not add customers to an automated referral sequence. If you offer a referral reward, say so plainly and make sure it is something you would be comfortable with the referred person knowing about.

Why it works

  • It starts with the result, not the ask. The customer is reminded why they are happy before you request anything.
  • "I'll ask once" is a promise, and it makes the request feel safe.
  • It gives two ways to help, an introduction or simply passing on your name, so the customer can choose how much effort to put in.

Before you send

Referred contacts often come as a name and a company. Confirm their address with the free email checker before writing, so the first impression your happy customer set up for you does not end in a bounce.

Verify your list before you send

The best template still bounces off an address that does not exist, and a high bounce rate is the quickest way to get a sending domain throttled. Upload the CSV and every address gets a live mailbox check, with valid, risky and invalid split into separate files.
