The email

Thanks for trying {{product}}. I can see you've {{completed_step}} but haven't {{next_step}} yet. That's the step most people get stuck on, and it's where the product starts being useful.

{{your_title}}, {{product}}Highlighted {{placeholders}} are the parts to replace. If you cannot fill one with something true and specific, cut the sentence rather than leaving it generic.
When to use it
Send it to trial users who are active enough to care but stalled before the step that matters. Base it on what they actually did in the product, and say so plainly. Tracking that is ordinary within your own app; just do not refer to anything they could not reasonably expect you to see.
Do not send it to people who have not logged in since signing up. They need a simpler nudge, and a call is too big an ask.
Why it works
- It is specific to their account. "You've done X but not Y" is more useful than "Want a demo?"
- The call has a concrete outcome. Leaving with a working setup is worth 15 minutes; a tour of the features is not.
- The self-serve link respects people who would rather not talk, and many trial users would not.
Before you send
Free-trial signups include a share of throwaway and mistyped addresses, which also explains some of your "inactive" users. Check new signups with the disposable email checker, or run the export through the free list health check before you start a trial nurture.
