What is a disposable email address?

Also called: temporary email, throwaway email, burner email

A disposable email address is a temporary mailbox from a service like Mailinator or 10MinuteMail, created to receive one message, usually a signup confirmation, and then abandoned. The addresses work when tested, so syntax and MX checks pass them, but the mailboxes are discarded within minutes or hours.

Disposable addresses are why a list can verify clean and still perform terribly. The domain has working MX records and the mailbox may genuinely exist at the moment of the check, so a verifier that only asks whether mail would be accepted returns valid. It will not exist by the time you send your second email.

Detecting them means maintaining a list of provider domains, which runs into the thousands and changes constantly. The list must never include real mail hosts: classing Gmail or Outlook as disposable would throw away most of a consumer list.

On signup forms, blocking disposable domains stops fake accounts and abuse of a trial or discount. On an outreach list, they are simply dead weight.

How SimpleVerifier handles it

Addresses at one of the 9,913 known disposable domains are returned as invalid with the reason Disposable address. Free mail providers like Gmail and Outlook are explicitly excluded from that list.
