What each type means for the caller

Toll-free: 0800–0805
Free to the caller, usually only from inside the country; the business that owns the number pays for the call. 9 digits after +33.
Premium rate: 0812–0819, 0822–0824, 0827–0829, 083, 085, 086, 0880–0883, 0885–0889 or 089
Charged above a normal call at a rate set by the service, with part of the charge going to the service provider. 9 digits after +33.
Shared cost: 0810, 0811, 0820, 0821, 0825, 0826, 0840, 0842, 0844 or 0884
The caller pays part of the cost and the owner pays the rest, so the price sits between a free and a normal call. 9 digits after +33.
Universal access (UAN): 0806–0809
One national number for a business with several sites, routed to the nearest or chosen office. 9 digits after +33.
VoIP: 09
Numbers issued for internet telephony services rather than a fixed line or a mobile network. 9 digits after +33.

Writing and dialling a France toll-free number

Inside France, dial the number with its leading 0. From abroad or in E.164, drop the 0 and put +33 in front: 0 801 23 45 67 becomes +33801234567. Many freephone numbers still only accept calls from inside France, and a call from abroad that does connect is usually charged.

Toll-free and premium numbers in a phone list

In a lead or customer list, a toll-free number usually reaches a company line rather than a person, and a premium-rate number costs you money to call. The free toll-free number checker flags them in a pasted list or CSV, and the France phone number format page covers mobiles and landlines.

Next step

A prefix says what a range is for. A live lookup says what the line is now.

Pro + Phone is $49.99 a month (or $499.90 a year): upload a CSV and every number gets a live line-type and carrier lookup, with the emails in the same file checked too.

Common questions

What is the toll-free prefix in France?
France toll-free numbers start with 0800–0805 at home, written +33 800–805 internationally. Every valid toll-free number starts that way, though not every number with those digits is in service.
How many digits is a France toll-free number?
9 digits after the country code +33, plus the trunk prefix 0 when dialled inside France.
Can I call a France toll-free number from abroad?
Sometimes. Dial +33 and the number without the leading 0. Many freephone numbers only take calls from inside France, and where they do connect from abroad the call is usually charged.
How do I spot a premium-rate number in France?
By its first digits: 0812–0819, 0822–0824, 0827–0829, 083, 085, 086, 0880–0883, 0885–0889 or 089. Shared-cost numbers start with 0810, 0811, 0820, 0821, 0825, 0826, 0840, 0842, 0844 or 0884. The prefix tells you the range is charged; the actual price is set per service.

The numbering plan only knows what a range was issued for.

In the US and Canada mobiles and landlines share the same prefixes, and anywhere a number can be ported or reassigned the range stops telling the whole story. A live carrier lookup asks the network data instead, which is what Pro + Phone ($49.99/mo) adds.

  • 5,000 live carrier lookups a month: real line type, including US numbers
  • Carrier name for every number looked up
  • Upload a CSV up to 100,000 rows; emails in the same file get a mailbox check
