Toll-free and premium numbers in Kenya
Toll-free numbers in Kenya start with 08000 or 08002–08008 when dialled inside Kenya (8000 or 8002–8008 after +254 from abroad) and have 9 or 10 digits after the country code. Premium-rate numbers start with 09000 or 09002–09009. Example: 0800 223 456, or +254800223456 in E.164.

Every valid Kenya number of each type starts with one of these digit groups. The example column shows Google’s example number for the range, written internationally.
| Type | Starts with, after +254 | Dialled inside Kenya | Digits | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Toll-free | 8000, 8002–8008 | 08000, 08002–08008 | 9 or 10 | +254 800 223 456 |
| Premium rate | 9000, 9002–9009 | 09000, 09002–09009 | 9 | +254 900 223 456 |
What each type means for the caller
- Toll-free: 08000 or 08002–08008
- Free to the caller, usually only from inside the country; the business that owns the number pays for the call. 9 or 10 digits after +254.
- Premium rate: 09000 or 09002–09009
- Charged above a normal call at a rate set by the service, with part of the charge going to the service provider. 9 digits after +254.
Writing and dialling a Kenya toll-free number
Inside Kenya, dial the number with its leading 0. From abroad or in E.164, drop the 0 and put +254 in front: 0800 223 456 becomes +254800223456. Many freephone numbers still only accept calls from inside Kenya, and a call from abroad that does connect is usually charged.
Toll-free and premium numbers in a phone list
In a lead or customer list, a toll-free number usually reaches a company line rather than a person, and a premium-rate number costs you money to call. The free toll-free number checker flags them in a pasted list or CSV, and the Kenya phone number format page covers mobiles and landlines.

A prefix says what a range is for. A live lookup says what the line is now.
Pro + Phone is $49.99 a month (or $499.90 a year): upload a CSV and every number gets a live line-type and carrier lookup, with the emails in the same file checked too.

Common questions
- What is the toll-free prefix in Kenya?
- Kenya toll-free numbers start with 08000 or 08002–08008 at home, written +254 8000 or 8002–8008 internationally. Every valid toll-free number starts that way, though not every number with those digits is in service.
- How many digits is a Kenya toll-free number?
- 9 or 10 digits after the country code +254, plus the trunk prefix 0 when dialled inside Kenya.
- Can I call a Kenya toll-free number from abroad?
- Sometimes. Dial +254 and the number without the leading 0. Many freephone numbers only take calls from inside Kenya, and where they do connect from abroad the call is usually charged.
- How do I spot a premium-rate number in Kenya?
- By its first digits: 09000 or 09002–09009. The prefix tells you the range is charged; the actual price is set per service.

The numbering plan only knows what a range was issued for.
In the US and Canada mobiles and landlines share the same prefixes, and anywhere a number can be ported or reassigned the range stops telling the whole story. A live carrier lookup asks the network data instead, which is what Pro + Phone ($49.99/mo) adds.
