Favicon checker: does this site serve a favicon and an Apple touch icon?

In short: Paste websites and see, for each, the favicon and Apple touch icon its home page declares (or /favicon.ico), whether each loads as an image, and its format and size. Limit: Icons added by JavaScript or listed only in a web app manifest aren't fetched.

A favicon checker reads a website's home page for its icon links and fetches each icon to confirm it loads as an image. Paste one site or up to 100 (500 after a Google sign-in): each gets Favicon and Apple icon, Favicon only, Broken favicon, No favicon or Unreachable, with the icon URL, how it was found, and its image format and pixel size.

Price: this tool is free. Checking a whole email list is from $9/mo, and the first 100 checks are free with Google, no card. See pricing

Loads each home page, reads its icon links, then fetches each icon to confirm it's an image. 100 websites a run, or 500 when you sign in.

Limits
Up to 100 websites a run without an account and 500 when signed in with Google.

How do browsers find a favicon?

From <link rel="icon"> in the page's head, as the HTML standard defines (rel="shortcut icon" is the old spelling of the same thing). With no icon link, browsers ask for /favicon.ico at the site root. iOS uses rel="apple-touch-icon" for home-screen bookmarks, or asks for /apple-touch-icon.png.

Google Search shows a site's favicon next to its results when the home page declares one with a link tag, the icon is square, at least 8x8 pixels (48x48 or larger recommended), and Googlebot may crawl both the page and the icon.

What counts as a broken favicon?

A declared or default icon that answers with an error, times out, or returns something that isn't an image, such as an HTML 404 page served with a 200 status. The checker reads the first bytes of each icon to tell ICO, PNG, GIF, JPEG, WebP and SVG apart and reads the pixel size where the format holds it, so a mislabelled file is caught.

  • It reads the first 256 KB of the home page and 64 KB of each icon.

Common questions

Why doesn't my favicon show in Google results?
Google needs a link tag on the home page, a square icon at least 8x8 pixels, and crawl access to both. It also updates favicons on its own schedule after the next crawl, not at once.
Do I still need favicon.ico?
Not if the page declares an icon, but browsers still ask for /favicon.ico when it doesn't, so serving one avoids 404s in the logs.
Are icons in a web app manifest checked?
The manifest link is noted, but its icons aren't fetched. Icons added by JavaScript aren't seen either.
What size should an Apple touch icon be?
Apple's guidelines use 180x180 pixels for current iPhones. The checker shows the size of the icon it found.
Can I check many sites at once?
Yes. 100 sites a run without an account and 500 after a free Google sign-in, with a CSV.
Is the favicon checker free?
Yes, it's a free tool with no card. At most five small fetches per site.
