How do I download a list of area codes by state?

Choose the countries: all +1 countries, the US and its territories, Canada, or the Caribbean and Atlantic.
Pick one state, province or country, or leave All of them. The count of codes shows next to each place.
Tick the columns you want and a format: CSV for spreadsheets, JSON for apps, SQL for a CREATE TABLE plus one INSERT per code.
Download the file or copy it. Add the non-geographic codes (toll-free, 900, 500 and others) if you want them in the same file.

How many area codes are there in the US?

About 370 area codes are in service across the 50 states and DC, plus a handful in US territories, and Canada has about 55. The exact counts are on this page and change as NANPA brings new codes into service: a state that runs out of numbers gets an overlay, a new code over the same area, so one place can have several codes. New York City, for example, is 212, 332, 646 and 917.

The list comes from NANPA's area code database, the official record for the North American Numbering Plan, which covers the US, Canada and 18 other countries and territories on +1. Canadian codes are planned by the Canadian Numbering Administrator but appear in the same database. The file date is shown above the download.

What's in each row?

The three-digit code; the state, province or country NANPA records for it, and its USPS or Canada Post code (NY, ON), or the ISO code for the Caribbean countries; the country; the time zones it covers, as IANA names such as America/Chicago, with both zones for codes that cross a line; the other codes in its overlay; the date NANPA lists it in service from; and whether local calls need 10 digits or 1 + 10.

A few of NANPA's places cover more than one province or territory, such as "Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island" (902 and 782) or Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut (867), so their code column holds both abbreviations. Codes such as 800, 900 and 500 aren't tied to a place; tick the option to add them as non-geographic rows.

Does an area code tell you where someone lives?

It tells you where the number was issued. People keep their numbers when they move and when they switch carriers, and VoIP numbers can be had in any area code, so a list keyed on area code is a good guess for territories and time zones, not a fact about the person.

It also says nothing about whether a number works or is a mobile; in the US and Canada mobiles and landlines share area codes. Use the bulk phone number validator for the format and a carrier lookup for the line itself.

Who uses this tool, and for what?

Developers: Seed an area-code-to-state table or a phone-field lookup with a SQL or JSON file instead of scraping a web page.
Sales ops: Map leads to territories or time zones from their area code, one state at a time or the whole list.
SMS and call teams: Build the calling-window table for a campaign from the time zone column.
Analysts: Join a phone list to state and country by the first three digits in a spreadsheet.

What can’t this tool tell you?

Geographic codes in service only; codes assigned but not yet in service are left out until they start.
An area code says where a number was issued, not where its holder is, which carrier serves it or whether it's a mobile.
Time zones are by area code; a code that crosses a zone line lists both, and the exact zone depends on the exchange.
