Gmail address checker: see if a Gmail account exists

In short: Asks Google's own mail servers whether a gmail.com or googlemail.com mailbox exists, without sending anything, and shows the one inbox dotted and +tagged spellings reach. Limit: Valid means the mailbox exists today, not that anyone reads it.

To check if a Gmail address exists, enter it here. The checker asks Google's mail servers whether the mailbox exists at the RCPT TO step, then disconnects before any message is sent, so nobody is emailed. Gmail rejects unknown accounts with 550 5.1.1, so you get a clear valid or invalid. Dots and +tags are shown as the one inbox they reach. It's free, with no account.

Price: this tool is free. Checking a whole email list is from $9/mo, and the first 100 checks are free with Google, no card. See pricing

Tuned for gmail.com, googlemail.com. Five checks a minute, no account needed. Nothing is sent to the address — we ask its mail server whether the mailbox exists, then disconnect.

What can a check confirm at Gmail, and what did we measure there? Can you verify a Gmail address?

How do I check a whole list of Gmail addresses?

  1. Paste the list into the bulk Gmail address checker first. It merges the same inbox written with dots, +tags or googlemail.com and flags typo domains such as gmial.com, free and with no account.
  2. Then upload the CSV, Gmail and every other provider together, at /verify. Every row gets the same live mailbox check, up to 100,000 rows a file, and valid, risky and invalid download as separate files.
  3. The first 100 email checks are free with a Google sign-in, no card. Bigger lists are on the plans.

How do I check if a Gmail address is real?

  1. Type or paste one Gmail address, such as [email protected] or [email protected].
  2. Press Check. The tool checks the syntax and domain, then asks Google's mail server about the mailbox and disconnects before anything is sent.
  3. Read the verdict: valid means Google accepted the mailbox, invalid means it said the account does not exist, risky means the check didn't get a clear answer.
  4. If the address has dots or a +tag, note the "Same Gmail inbox as" line: that is the address to deduplicate on.

Example

You enter
An invented address: [email protected].
You get
Invalid, with the reason "Mailbox not found": Google's mail server rejected the account at RCPT TO and the tool disconnected before any message was sent. For [email protected] the result also shows the one inbox it reaches, [email protected].
Limits
Five checks a minute per IP address, one address at a time, no account needed.

How do I check if a Gmail address exists without emailing it?

Ask Google's mail server instead of the mailbox. Every gmail.com address is served by the same mail hosts (gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com and four backups, per DNS on 22 October 2026), and they answer the RCPT TO question honestly. Google documents the replies in its Gmail SMTP errors and codes reference: 550 5.1.1 "The email account that you tried to reach does not exist", and 550 5.2.1 for an inactive account.

This checker runs that conversation for you. It also asks about a random address first, so a server that accepts everything is reported as risky rather than valid. Gmail doesn't accept everything, which is why Gmail is one of the easier providers to verify. The long version, with every code, is in how to check if a Gmail address exists.

Do dots and plus signs change a Gmail address?

No. Google says dots don't matter in Gmail addresses, and mail to [email protected] arrives at [email protected]. googlemail.com is the same service too. So [email protected] and [email protected] are one inbox, and the checker shows that canonical form under the result.

That matters when you clean a list: the same person can appear three times under three spellings. To find every repeat in a whole file, use the Gmail address normalizer. The dot rule applies only to gmail.com and googlemail.com; on a company domain run by Google Workspace, a dot makes a different address.

What does a valid, invalid or risky Gmail result mean?

Valid means Google accepted the mailbox today. It doesn't prove anyone reads it. Invalid means Google said the account does not exist (or the address failed syntax, or is at a typo domain such as gmial.com); remove it. Risky on a Gmail address is uncommon and usually means the check itself was cut short: a temporary reply, a refused connection, or the free tools' daily mailbox-check capacity running out. Check again later before deciding.

Addresses like [email protected] come back risky as role-based. And if the part before the @ breaks Google's username rules (6 to 30 letters, numbers and periods), the checker says so: those rules apply to new accounts, so treat it as a hint and go by the server's answer.

Who uses this tool, and for what?

Sales and recruiting
Confirm a personal Gmail address someone gave you on a call or a form before you write to it, instead of finding out from a bounce.
SaaS signups
Spot-check suspicious trial signups: an invented Gmail address comes back invalid, and the canonical inbox shows when several signups share one account.
List owners
Test a handful of Gmail addresses from an old export before deciding whether the whole list needs verifying.

What can’t this tool tell you?

  • Valid means the mailbox exists today, not that anyone reads it.
  • One address at a time, five a minute. Whole lists need the bulk verifier.
  • On Google Workspace company domains set to catch-all, no address can be confirmed; those come back risky.
  • The username-rules note is a hint: older accounts can predate Google's current rules.

Common questions

Can you check if a Gmail address exists without sending an email?
Yes. Google's mail servers answer the SMTP RCPT TO command with 550 5.1.1 for an account that doesn't exist and accept one that does. The checker asks that question and disconnects before sending, so the account owner receives nothing.
Will the Gmail user know I checked their address?
No message is delivered, so nothing appears in their inbox. The check ends after the mail server answers about the mailbox, before any message content is transmitted.
Are [email protected] and [email protected] the same?
Yes. Google says dots don't matter in Gmail addresses, and anything after a + sign is ignored for delivery, so both reach one inbox. This applies only to gmail.com and googlemail.com.
Why does a Gmail address show as valid when nobody uses it?
Valid means the mailbox exists, not that someone reads it. Google's inactive account policy deletes personal accounts unused for two years, so an abandoned address can stay valid until then.
Can I check a Google Workspace company address here?
Yes, any address is checked. But a Workspace domain can be set to send unknown addresses to a catch-all mailbox, and then no address there can be confirmed. The general email checker explains those results.
Is the Gmail checker free?
Yes, five checks a minute with no account. For a whole list, sign in with Google for 100 free email checks, no card, or use a paid plan.
Can I check many Gmail addresses at once?
Yes. The bulk Gmail address checker cleans a pasted list for free and checks about 10 mailboxes live. For a whole file, upload it at /verify: every row gets a live check, and the first 100 are free with a Google sign-in, no card.
Does a valid Gmail address mean the person reads it?
No. Valid means Google has a mailbox by that name today. It can't tell you whether the owner still uses it, and an abandoned account can stay valid for a long time before Google closes it.
