iCloud email checker: does this mailbox exist?

In short: Checks icloud.com, me.com and mac.com addresses for syntax, typo domains, mail servers and disposable or role use, then asks Apple's mail server whether the mailbox exists. Limit: Not every check gets an answer: a temporary reply, a deferral or a refusal of the checking server comes back risky, not valid or invalid.

This iCloud email checker tests an icloud.com, me.com or mac.com address for broken syntax, typo domains, a missing mail server, and disposable or role use, then asks Apple's mail server about the mailbox at the SMTP RCPT TO step, without sending anything. Apple rejects unknown users with 550 5.1.1, so a missing mailbox comes back invalid and an existing one valid. A temporary reply or deferral comes back risky.

Price: this tool is free. Checking a whole email list is from $9/mo, and the first 100 checks are free with Google, no card. See pricing

Tuned for icloud.com, me.com, mac.com. Five checks a minute, no account needed. Nothing is sent to the address — we ask its mail server whether the mailbox exists, then disconnect.

What can a check confirm at iCloud Mail, and what did we measure there? Can you verify an iCloud Mail address?

How do I check an iCloud email address?

  1. Type or paste one address, such as [email protected], [email protected] or [email protected].
  2. Press Check. Syntax, domain, mail server, disposable and role checks run, then a random address and yours are offered to Apple's server.
  3. Read the verdict. Valid means Apple accepted the mailbox. Invalid means it can't receive mail. Risky means the check couldn't confirm it, for example after a temporary reply.
  4. Check risky iCloud addresses again later, and decide the rest by where they came from: a confirmed signup is a reasonable send, an old list needs care.

Example

You enter
One address: [email protected].
You get
Invalid, with the reason "Mailbox not found": Apple's server replied 550 5.1.1 at RCPT TO. A real mailbox comes back valid once Apple has also rejected a random address; a temporary reply or timeout comes back risky.
Limits
Five checks a minute per IP address, one address at a time, no account needed.

Can you check if an iCloud email address exists?

Usually, yes. iCloud addresses are handled by Apple's mail hosts mx01.mail.icloud.com and mx02.mail.icloud.com (DNS, 22 October 2026). Since 28 October 2026 the checker probes them like any other domain: it offers a random address first to rule out a catch-all, then names yours at RCPT TO and disconnects before anything is sent. In our live checks Apple rejected unknown users with 550 5.1.1, which comes back invalid ("Mailbox not found"), and accepted existing mailboxes, which come back valid.

Not every check gets an answer. A temporary reply, a deferral or a refusal of the checking server (a 5.7.x code) says nothing about the mailbox, so those come back risky, never invalid. The checker also catches the common problems before the probe: a mistyped address, a typo domain with no mail server, a throwaway domain. See how to tell if your email verifier is lying for how to test any tool's answers.

Are icloud.com, me.com and mac.com the same?

They are all iCloud Mail. me.com and mac.com are older Apple address domains, and on 22 October 2026 all three published the same two MX hosts at mail.icloud.com. So they are checked the same way and get the same result.

iCloud+ subscribers can also create Hide My Email addresses: Apple describes them as "unique, random email addresses" that forward to the user's real inbox (Apple Support). They look like random strings at icloud.com, they are real ways to reach a person, and they can't be traced back to the main address. See plus addressing and trial abuse for what that means for signups.

Should I send to an iCloud address that comes back risky?

Check it again later first: risky at iCloud usually means the check was cut short. If it stays risky, let the source decide. An iCloud address from your own form, confirmed by double opt-in, is a reasonable send. An address from an old or bought list is not, because nothing in the verifier's answer vouches for it. When you do send, Apple's postmaster page asks senders to use SPF and DKIM and publish a DMARC policy.

For a whole file, the email list cleaner removes duplicates, bad syntax and dead domains in your browser, and the general email checker runs a full mailbox check on any domain that answers.

Who uses this tool, and for what?

Support teams
Catch a mistyped or throwaway address on a signup that looks like iCloud before you reply.
List owners
Find iCloud addresses that no longer exist before a send, and re-check the ones that come back risky.
SaaS teams
Recognize Hide My Email relays as real, forwarding addresses rather than junk when you review signups.

What can’t this tool tell you?

  • Not every check gets an answer: a temporary reply, a deferral or a refusal of the checking server comes back risky, not valid or invalid.
  • It can't tell a Hide My Email relay from a main iCloud address, or link the two.
  • Apple doesn't publish how its servers answer mailbox checks, so this handling rests on our own live checks, dated here.
  • One address at a time, five a minute.

Common questions

Why does my iCloud address show as risky?
Because this check didn't get a clear answer: Apple's server gave a temporary reply or deferred, refused the checking server, or accepted a made-up address in the catch-all test. Rather than guess, the checker reports risky. Risky means unconfirmed, not bad; check again later.
Can the checker say an iCloud address is invalid?
Yes. When Apple rejects the mailbox with 550 5.1.1 the result is invalid ("Mailbox not found"), and so is broken syntax, a typo domain with no mail server, or a disposable domain. A refusal of the checking server or a temporary reply is never read as invalid.
Is a me.com address the same as icloud.com?
Both are iCloud Mail and use the same Apple mail servers. me.com and mac.com are older Apple address domains; they get the same mailbox check as icloud.com.
What is a Hide My Email address?
An iCloud+ feature that creates unique, random addresses forwarding to the user's real inbox. They are legitimate and reach a real person, but each one is a separate string you can't link to the main address.
