Phone number country lookup: which country is each number from?
In short: Paste a list or upload a CSV and get each number's country and calling code, including which of the 25 places on +1 a number belongs to. Limit: It needs a country code. National numbers without one aren't placed unless you tell the tool every such number is from one country.
A phone number's country comes from its calling code, the digits after the +: +44 is the United Kingdom, +91 India, +61 Australia. Where several countries share a code, as 25 do on +1, the next digits settle it. This phone number country lookup names the country for every number you paste, in your browser, using Google's open-source numbering-plan data.
Price: this tool is free. Live line type and carrier lookups come with Pro + Phone at $49.99/mo; email checking is from $9/mo. See pricing

How do I find the country for a whole phone list?
- Upload the CSV right here: up to 25 MB, the phone column is found for you, and the file never leaves your browser. The download adds country, ISO code, calling code and E.164 columns to your rows.
- To fix how the numbers are written, before or after, use the phone number formatter.
- The country isn't proof a line is live or mobile. For live line type and carrier, upload the file at /verify with Pro + Phone; email addresses in the same file get a mailbox check too.
Can a phone number checker tell if a number is in service?
No checker that only reads the digits can. SimpleVerifier's free phone tools check format, country, E.164 and the line type the numbering plan allocates, in your browser. Pro + Phone ($49.99/mo) runs a live carrier lookup for the current carrier and line type, 5,000 a month, but it never claims a number is in service.

How to find which country a phone number is from
- Paste numbers one per line, or upload a CSV up to 25 MB; the phone column is found for you.
- Write numbers in international form (+44… or 0044…). A national number such as 020 7946 0958 has no country in it; tick the box only if every such number is from one country you know.
- Press Find the countries and read the summary: how many countries, which ones, and how many numbers had no code.
- Download the CSV with country, ISO code, calling code and E.164 columns added to your original rows.
Example
- You enter
- Three numbers,
+1 415 555 0132,+1 416 555 0199and+44 20 7946 0958. - You get
- United States (US, +1), Canada (CA, +1) and United Kingdom (GB, +44), each with its E.164 form, so the two +1 numbers are split by country.
- Limits
- Uploaded files can be up to 25 MB; there is no cap on the number of rows, and it all runs in your browser.
How do I find out what country a phone number is from?
Read its country calling code, the one to three digits after the + or the 00 in front of an international number. International numbers follow the ITU's E.164 plan: a country calling code, then the national number. The lookup reads the calling code and checks the rest against that country's numbering plan, using libphonenumber, the open-source library Google maintains for Android. Numbers written with 00 in front, the international prefix in most of the world, are read as if they started with +.
The ITU publishes the list of assigned country codes. Some codes are global services rather than countries: +800 is international freephone, and the lookup labels those numbers as such instead of naming a country.
Which country is +1, +44, +63 or +91?
+63 is the Philippines and +91 is India; each of those codes belongs to one country. +1 and +44 are shared. On +1, the United States, Canada and 23 Caribbean and Pacific territories split the numbering space by area code, so +1 416 is Canada and +1 876 is Jamaica. +44 covers the United Kingdom, Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man; +7 covers Russia and Kazakhstan; +61 covers Australia and its Christmas and Cocos (Keeling) Islands. The lookup uses the digits after the code to separate them, and where a number doesn't fit any member's ranges it says so instead of picking one.
Each country's lengths, mobile prefixes and examples are on its own page, for example United Kingdom, India and Philippines, with the rest under phone number formats by country.
Can you tell the country of a number without a country code?
Not reliably. A number written in national form, such as 020 7946 0958 or (201) 555-0123, carries no country, and the same digits can be valid in several countries, so the tool reports No country code rather than guess. A leading 07, for example, is a UK mobile, but French mobiles start 06 or 07 too.
If you know a list came from one country, tick the box and choose it; those numbers are then read as that country's. To rewrite a whole list into international form, use the phone number formatter or add a country code.
Does the country code show where the caller is?
No. The calling code shows where a number was issued. It doesn't show where the person is, whether the number is a mobile, which carrier holds it after porting, or whether it's connected; nothing here contacts a network. Valid format means only that the digits fit a range the country's numbering plan has allocated.
For the next step, the landline or mobile checker types numbers from the numbering plan. A live line type and carrier lookup needs a paid data source, which is what the phone add-on adds.
Country code, trunk prefix or exit code: what's the difference?
Three different prefixes get called "the code". Only the country calling code belongs in an international or E.164 number. Values from libphonenumber's data:
| Country | Country calling code | Trunk prefix (calls inside the country) | Exit code (calls abroad) |
|---|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | +44 | 0 | 00 |
| United States and Canada | +1 | 1 | 011 |
| India | +91 | 0 | 00 |
| Australia | +61 | 0 | 0011 |
| Philippines | +63 | 0 | 00 |
| Japan | +81 | 0 | 010 |
So a UK number dialled from the US is 011 44 20 7946 0958, and from anywhere it can be written +44 20 7946 0958, with the trunk 0 dropped.
Who uses this tool, and for what?
- Sales ops
- Route inbound leads to the right region or rep by the country of their phone number, and spot rows where the phone country and the stated country disagree.
- SMS teams
- See which countries a list covers before a send, since pricing and sending rules differ by destination, then format each country's numbers to E.164.
- SaaS teams
- Check the country mix of sign-up phone numbers, and flag accounts whose number comes from a country you don't serve.
- Agencies
- Split a client's international list by country in one pass; the CSV keeps every original column with country, ISO code and calling code added.
What can’t this tool tell you?
- It needs a country code. National numbers without one aren't placed unless you tell the tool every such number is from one country.
- It shows the country that issued the number, not where the person is. Roaming mobiles and VoIP numbers can be used anywhere.
- Shared codes are separated by number ranges. A number on +1 or +44 that fits no member's ranges is shown as one of several countries, not guessed.
- Global service codes such as +800 have no country.
- A valid format means the digits fit an allocated range. It doesn't mean the line is in service.
Common questions
- How can I tell which country a phone number is from?
- Look at the digits after the + (or after 00): that's the country calling code. +44 is the UK, +49 Germany, +91 India. Where countries share a code, such as +1 for the US, Canada and the Caribbean, the area code that follows identifies the country. Paste numbers above to look them up in bulk.
- Which country is phone number +63?
- The Philippines. +63 is assigned to the Philippines alone, and its mobile numbers follow as 9 plus nine more digits, such as +63 917 123 4567.
- Which country is phone number +91?
- India. Indian mobile numbers have 10 digits after +91, usually starting with 6, 7, 8 or 9.
- Which country uses phone numbers starting with 07?
- 07 isn't a country code. It's the start of a national number, written without the international part. UK mobiles start 07, and so do some French mobiles, so you need the + code to be sure.
- Is there a country with 24-digit phone numbers?
- No. The E.164 standard caps an international number at 15 digits including the country code. A 24-digit string is usually two numbers run together, or a number with an extension or extra digits attached.
- Can you find the country of a number without a + code?
- No, not reliably. A national number like 020 7946 0958 doesn't say which country it belongs to, and the same digits can be valid in several. The tool reports these as No country code, unless you tell it every such number is from one country.
- Is +1 always the United States?
- No. +1 is the North American Numbering Plan, shared by the US, Canada and 23 Caribbean and Pacific territories in Google's numbering data. The three-digit area code tells them apart: +1 416 is Toronto, +1 876 is Jamaica.
- Does this show where the person is now?
- No. It shows the country that issued the number. Mobiles roam and people move; nothing here locates a phone or contacts a carrier.
- Are my numbers uploaded?
- No. The lookup runs in your browser with Google's numbering-plan data. Nothing is sent to us, so it's fine for customer lists.
- How do I find the country of every phone number in an Excel file?
- Save the sheet as CSV and upload it here. The phone column is found for you, every number gets its country from the calling code, and the download adds country, ISO code, calling code and E.164 columns to your original rows. Numbers written without a + code need the country box ticked, and only when they're all from one country.
